Overview

Dushanbe to the Wakhan Valley and back along the Panj river, with Afghanistan on the other bank for most of the way. Homestays in Pamiri houses, hot springs at Bibi Fatima, the Yamchun fortress and the Khargush pass at over 4,300 m. 4x4 with a driver-guide who has done the road a hundred times.

GBAO permit and e-visa support included in the planning; permit fees are paid locally. Altitude is real: we build the ascent gradually.

Highlights

—The Panj river road with Afghanistan across the water
—Wakhan Valley homestays with Pamiri families
—Yamchun fortress and the Bibi Fatima hot springs
—Khargush pass on the M41
—Khorog’s botanical garden at 2,300 m

Is this trip for you?

Good for
  • Travellers who want the great mountain road more than any monument
  • Anyone comfortable with homestays and long 4x4 days
  • Photographers and walkers
Maybe not for you if
  • You have heart or lung conditions — two nights are above 2,800 m and the pass is 4,344 m
  • You need a hotel every night — the Wakhan is homestays only
  • You get car-sick

Our honest opinion

+What we love about it
  • Pamiri hospitality is the warmest in Central Asia
  • The Wakhan side of the road is quieter than the Murghab side
−What to be ready for
  • Six days of 5–8 hours in the car
  • Showers are a luxury between Khorog and Khorog

Bring a down jacket in July. The Khargush pass is cold at any time of year.

What guests wrote

“The Pamir Highway had been on my list for fifteen years. Nine days in a Land Cruiser with a driver who has done the road a hundred times, homestays in the Wakhan where the family cooks for you, hot springs at Bibi Fatima, the Karakul lake at 3,900 m. It is not comfortable — it is better than comfortable. One request: pack warm, the nights at altitude in August were close to freezing.”

Jonas Eriksen · DenmarkAugust 2026 via Tripadvisor

“Hotels got three stars from me only because there are no hotels — they are homestays, and I would not swap them. The driver, Davlat, is a legend. The scenery is impossible to describe. Book it.”
