Overview

The Caucasus is a mountain range of small nations: Mountain Jews in the Red Settlement of Quba, Tat-speaking coppersmiths in Lahic, Udi Christians in Nij, Svans in their towers, Molokan Russians in Armenia’s north, Yezidis on the Aragats plain. This 12-day route crosses Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia to meet them — in their homes, workshops and churches — with the three capitals and the great monuments on the way.

Three guides, two border crossings, one long and extraordinary road.

Highlights

—The Red Settlement of Quba — the last all-Jewish town outside Israel
—The Udi village of Nij and the Albanian churches
—Lahic coppersmiths and Sheki’s palace
—Ushguli and the Svan towers
—Haghpat and the Molokan village of Fioletovo
—Khor Virap, Geghard and Yerevan

Is this trip for you?

Good for
  • Travellers interested in people more than monuments
  • Anyone with 12 days who wants all three countries overland
  • Photographers
Maybe not for you if
  • You dislike long driving days — there are four over six hours
  • You need every hotel to be four-star

Our honest opinion

+What we love about it
  • Meetings in homes, not staged shows
  • The Mestia detour adds the Caucasus at its highest
−What to be ready for
  • The Armenia–Azerbaijan border is closed, so the route is one-way and ends in Yerevan
  • Two border crossings on foot

Visit Azerbaijan before Armenia, never the reverse: an Armenian stamp can be a problem at the Azerbaijani border.

What guests wrote

“This is a trip about people. Lunch with a Mountain Jewish family in the Red Settlement, the Udi church at Nij, coppersmiths in Lahic, three nights with Svans in Mestia, the Molokan village in Armenia. Three countries, three guides, two borders on foot, several very long days — and the richest two weeks of travel we have done. Be realistic about the driving; the itinerary is honest about it.”
