Svaneti: Europe’s Highest Villages — 7 Days of Towers and Trails
Overview
Svaneti is the Georgia of the postcards: medieval tower-houses, glaciers at the end of the valley, villages that were never conquered. This tour takes you there by road from Tbilisi via Kutaisi, gives you three nights in Mestia with a Svan family, a day walk to the Chalaadi glacier and a jeep day to Ushguli, the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe at 2,100 m, under the 5,000 m wall of Shkhara.
The walking is moderate (12–15 km on the two trail days, no climbing), the food is Svan — kubdari meat pies, local honey, chacha — and the return goes by Martvili canyon.
Highlights
Is this trip for you?
- Walkers who want real mountains without camping
- Photographers — the towers at dawn are the shot
- Anyone who found Tbilisi too busy
- You dislike long gravel drives — Ushguli is 2 h each way by jeep
- You need a private bathroom every night (the Svan guesthouse shares)
Our honest opinion
- Three nights in one place: unpack once
- A family kitchen in Mestia beats any restaurant
- Weather in Svaneti changes by the hour; bring a rain shell in August
- The Zugdidi–Mestia road is slow
The Ushguli road is closed by snow from November to May — this tour runs June to October only.

Traveller reviews
What guests wrote
“Magnifique. Un point en moins pour la maison d’hôtes à Mestia (salle de bain partagée, chauffage capricieux en septembre) — mais l’accueil de la famille compensait largement. Ushguli sous la neige fraîche, inoubliable.”
“Svaneti is the Caucasus you imagine: towers, glaciers, villages in the clouds. Three nights with a Svan family in Mestia — the grandmother’s kubdari pies, home-made chacha, stories about the towers. The Chalaadi glacier walk is easy, the Ushguli jeep road is not for nervous passengers. Martvili canyon on the way back was a lovely gentle finish.”
Good to know
Most nationalities enter Uzbekistan visa-free for 30–90 days. If your passport needs an e-visa, it takes 2–3 working days online — we check your case and guide you at booking.
The local currency is the Uzbek som (UZS). Visa and Mastercard work in city hotels, restaurants and supermarkets; keep some cash for bazaars, taxis and tips. ATMs dispense som and sometimes USD.
April–June and September–November are warm and clear — ideal for walking the old cities. July–August afternoons exceed 35°C; winter departures run at reduced prices.
Uzbekistan uses European plug types C and F, 220V. Travellers from the UK, US and Asia need a standard Euro adapter — one per device is enough, hotels have plenty of sockets.
Everyday dress is relaxed across all four cities. Inside mosques and madrasas, shoulders and knees should be covered; headscarves for women are only needed in a few active mosques — your guide will tell you when.
Your included eSIM is activated on arrival, so you’re online from the airport. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable in all four cities; your coordinator stays reachable on WhatsApp or Telegram throughout.
Free cancellation up to 30 days before departure. 50% refund up to 15 days before; after that the booking is non-refundable, but you can move to another date once for free.
Medical insurance for the tour days is included. We still recommend personal travel insurance covering cancellation and baggage — we can suggest trusted providers.
