Silk Road & Wine Road — 9 Days: Baku to Tbilisi through Sheki and Kakheti
Overview
Overland from the Caspian to the Caucasus: Baku and Gobustan, the Silk Road towns of Shamakhi and Sheki, the Lagodekhi border crossing, and then Georgia’s Kakheti wine province — Signagi, Alaverdi, a supra in a family cellar — before finishing in Tbilisi with a day to Kazbegi. One guide for each country, hand-over at the border, and the oldest wine culture in the world at the end of the road.
Highlights
Is this trip for you?
- Travellers who want two countries without a flight
- Wine people — Kakheti is the finale
- Anyone continuing to Armenia (add our 5-day Highlights from Tbilisi)

Our honest opinion
- The Sheki → Signagi day is the best single day on the Caucasus road
- Two guides, two cuisines, one trip
- The Lagodekhi border can take an hour at weekends
- Day 3 is long
Add Armenia: Tbilisi → Haghpat → Dilijan → Yerevan is a 2-day extension we run constantly.

Traveller reviews
What guests wrote
“Baku to Tbilisi overland with two guides, two cuisines and the Lagodekhi border crossed on foot with our suitcases — which sounds dreadful and took twenty minutes. The Azerbaijan half is fascinating; the Georgian half is delicious. Finishing with a day in Kazbegi was the perfect last chapter. Both guides (Elvin and Mariam) were outstanding.”
“Two very different countries in one well-planned trip. The Sheki–Signagi day was my favourite: palace in the morning, border at lunch, a Georgian winery by afternoon. Hotels good throughout. Slightly expensive for two people; cheaper in a group of four.”
Good to know
Most nationalities enter Uzbekistan visa-free for 30–90 days. If your passport needs an e-visa, it takes 2–3 working days online — we check your case and guide you at booking.
The local currency is the Uzbek som (UZS). Visa and Mastercard work in city hotels, restaurants and supermarkets; keep some cash for bazaars, taxis and tips. ATMs dispense som and sometimes USD.
April–June and September–November are warm and clear — ideal for walking the old cities. July–August afternoons exceed 35°C; winter departures run at reduced prices.
Uzbekistan uses European plug types C and F, 220V. Travellers from the UK, US and Asia need a standard Euro adapter — one per device is enough, hotels have plenty of sockets.
Everyday dress is relaxed across all four cities. Inside mosques and madrasas, shoulders and knees should be covered; headscarves for women are only needed in a few active mosques — your guide will tell you when.
Your included eSIM is activated on arrival, so you’re online from the airport. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable in all four cities; your coordinator stays reachable on WhatsApp or Telegram throughout.
Free cancellation up to 30 days before departure. 50% refund up to 15 days before; after that the booking is non-refundable, but you can move to another date once for free.
Medical insurance for the tour days is included. We still recommend personal travel insurance covering cancellation and baggage — we can suggest trusted providers.
