Overview

Altyn-Emel’s singing dune and painted Aktau mountains, Charyn Canyon, the drowned forest of Kaindy and the Kolsai lakes — all from Almaty, with village guesthouses where the parks are. A week of big landscapes, no tent required.

Private 4x4 with driver and an English-speaking guide; full board in the villages where there is no restaurant.

Highlights

—The Singing Dune of Altyn-Emel
—Aktau’s striped white-and-red mountains
—Charyn Canyon’s Valley of Castles
—Kaindy’s sunken forest and the Kolsai lakes
—Medeo and Shymbulak above Almaty

Is this trip for you?

Good for
  • Nature and landscape photographers
  • Travellers who want Kazakhstan beyond Almaty
  • Families with older children
Maybe not for you if
  • You want cities and monuments — this is parks and villages
  • You need hotels every night (four nights are village guesthouses)

Our honest opinion

+What we love about it
  • Altyn-Emel is empty compared with Charyn
  • Guesthouse cooking in Saty is a highlight in itself
−What to be ready for
  • Long gravel roads in the park
  • Kaindy can be closed after heavy rain

Go in May or September–October for colour; July is hot in the desert part.

What guests wrote

“Beautiful landscapes and a very professional operation. I would have liked one less driving day and one more walking day — the distances in Kazakhstan are enormous. Food outside Almaty is repetitive. Charyn at sunset, however, was one of the best moments of the year.”

Sarah Mitchell · United KingdomSeptember 2026 via Tripadvisor

“Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes (the sunken forest is extraordinary), the singing dune in Altyn-Emel, and Almaty with its cable car and bazaar. A week is right. Our guide Aliya was superb — sharp, funny, well read. The Kolsai guesthouse is simple and the food plain; the lakes make up for it.”
