Overview

Baku is three cities in one: a walled medieval Old City with the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs’ palace, a belle-époque oil-boom city of mansions and boulevards, and a 21st-century skyline of Flame Towers and Zaha Hadid curves. This short break adds the two day-trips that explain the country’s name — the Gobustan petroglyphs and mud volcanoes, and the eternal fire of Yanar Dag with the Ateshgah fire temple.

Highlights

—The walled Old City, Maiden Tower and Shirvanshahs’ palace
—Gobustan petroglyphs and the bubbling mud volcanoes
—Yanar Dag burning hillside and Ateshgah fire temple
—Heydar Aliyev Centre and the Flame Towers at night
—Caspian seafront boulevard

Is this trip for you?

Good for
  • A stopover on the way to Central Asia (direct flights to Tashkent, Almaty, Bishkek)
  • Winter visitors
  • Architecture people
Maybe not for you if
  • You want countryside — take Grand Discovery
  • You expect bargain prices; Baku is the most expensive city in the Caucasus

Our honest opinion

+What we love about it
  • Three centuries of architecture in one walkable city
  • Gobustan and the mud volcanoes are unlike anything else in the region
−What to be ready for
  • The wind — Baku means “wind-pounded” and it earns the name
  • Alcohol is expensive outside hotels

The Baku–Tashkent flight makes this a perfect first three days before any of our Uzbekistan tours.

What guests wrote

“Baku surpreendeu! Cidade velha, arquitetura moderna, os vulcões de lama. Guia simpático e pontual. Um pouco caro para comer fora, mas a viagem valeu muito.”

Ana Silva · BrazilOctober 2026 via Google

“Used this as a three-night stopover on the way to Tashkent and it was a brilliant idea. Baku in winter is windy but empty of tourists; the Old City, the Flame Towers at night, the mud volcanoes (we took the Soviet jeep, do that) and the petroglyphs at Gobustan. Guide Rashad was excellent. Hotel in the Old City was lovely.”
