Bigin A masterpiece of Islamic architecture of medieval East One of the most significant architectural ensembles of medieval East – the Gur Emir was built in the southwestern part of Samarkand at the beginning of the XV century. This majestic complex, often featured in Uzbekistan tours, consisted of a khanaka, the madrasah of Muhammad Sultan (grandson of Amir Timur), and, later, the tombs of Amir Timur himself and his descendants.

Sher-Dor Madrasah (Sherdor) was built on Registan Square in Samarkand between 1619 and 1636. The name translates to “Madrassah with Lions”. It is a grand yet slightly exaggerated reflection of the Ulugbek Madrasah, located just opposite on the western side of Registan Square. Although constructed 200 years later, Sher-Dor is larger in size, though it lags behind its “elder brother” in the quality of craftsmanship.
