Overview

The classic loop on your own schedule, with Altyn-Arashan’s hot springs added and the return to Bishkek through the red-rock village of Kyzyl-Oy and the Suusamyr valley. Private car and driver-guide; yurt and guesthouse nights where the landscape is.

Ten days is the length we would pick for Kyrgyzstan: enough to slow down at the lake and still reach the places the groups skip.

Highlights

—Altyn-Arashan hot springs by Soviet 4x4
—Son-Kul yurt night
—Kyzyl-Oy canyon and the Suusamyr valley
—Eagle hunters and the Fairy Tale canyon
—Private driver-guide throughout

Is this trip for you?

Good for
  • Couples and families who want the loop at their own pace
  • Anyone who wants Altyn-Arashan and Kyzyl-Oy, which groups skip
  • Travellers who prefer a driver-guide to a group leader
Maybe not for you if
  • You want a group to share the evenings with
  • You are travelling before mid-May or after September — Son-Kul is closed

Our honest opinion

+What we love about it
  • Every yurt camp is run by a local family, not a tour company
  • Issyk-Kul never freezes — swimming in June, snow peaks behind you
−What to be ready for
  • Roads to Son-Kul and the south shore are gravel; allow for a bumpy hour or two
  • Showers at yurt camps are basic or absent

The Altyn-Arashan track is rough and brilliant; the old UAZ van is part of the experience.

What guests wrote

“We wanted Kyrgyzstan at our own pace and this private tour gave us exactly that. We asked to skip the eagle show and spend longer at Son-Kul, and the guide just made it happen. Our driver Bakyt was careful on the gravel. Highly recommended for couples who like a flexible plan.”
