Set off from the magical city of Khiva and journey into the mystical deserts of Karakalpakstan, where the lost shores of the Aral Sea and haunting landscapes await. This 3-day, 2-night adventure offers an unforgettable blend of history, stark beauty, and authentic nomadic experiences — perfect for curious, adventurous travelers.
Your journey begins with a morning departure from Khiva, traveling across wide open steppes and along ancient Silk Road routes. Arrive in Nukus, the cultural heart of Karakalpakstan, and visit the renowned Savitsky Art Museum (optional), home to a fascinating collection of banned Soviet avant-garde art and rich ethnographic exhibits.
From Nukus, continue to Muynaq, once a bustling port on the Aral Sea. Here, visit the haunting Ship Graveyard, where rusting fishing boats lie stranded in the desert sands — a powerful symbol of one of the world’s most dramatic environmental disasters. Learn about the region’s history at the local museum and imagine the once-thriving life on the shores of the sea.
Cross the surreal Ustyurt Plateau, with its endless canyons and moon-like landscapes, on your way to the remote Aral Sea shore. Arrive at your yurt camp, set beside the shrinking sea, and enjoy a traditional dinner under a sky filled with stars. Share stories around the campfire before spending the night in cozy yurts, listening to the quiet desert night.
Wake up to a magical sunrise over the Aral Sea and enjoy a hearty breakfast at camp. Spend the morning exploring the shoreline, climbing nearby cliffs for sweeping views, and capturing incredible photos of this otherworldly scene.
On the final day, journey back through the dramatic desert scenery to Nukus and onward to Khiva. Along the way, stop at scenic viewpoints and small desert villages to better understand the resilient life in this remote region. Return to Khiva by evening, filled with unforgettable stories and images of a rarely seen side of Uzbekistan.
